Shoulders of Giants

Type is the most vital skill anyone can have as a designer. This editorial project combined making readable type decisions and adding creative type delivery. Our guidelines for the project were to go out and time a professional in the industry and interview them.

Project Goal

My professional was John Stapleton of Trade Supply Co. I was very interested in interviewing him because of his background and how he grew up. His life resonated with me, being that it reminded me of mine. The conversation we had was very open, as shown in the spreads.

Overview

By having this interview with Stapleton, I learned how much he loves typography and enjoys unorthodox design like myself. When making the cover and the spreads, my goal was to keep everything structured and have small pockets of one-liners to show how our conversation flowed.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:
  1. Capturing interview essence
  2. Design around clients' interest
  3. Use of breathing space
  4. Smooth breaks between questions

If you have a full spread, feel free to experiment; the more you can be creative with how you deliver the content is working it. I learned that even though it's editorial I can still be expressive.
